Abstract
Epizootic Ulcerative Syndrome (EUS) is a devastating fish disease. Numerous wild fishes viz., Mystus seenghala, M. cavasius, Mastacembellus amatus, Macrognathus aculeatus, Puntiusticto, P. Sarana, Nandus nandus, Xenentodon cancia, Channa striatus, C. Punctatus, Chanda ranga, Trichogaster faciatus and Notopterus notopterus suffered from EUS in various water bodies of Bhopal. Main symptom of the disease is the appearance of haemorrhagic ulcerative lesions on the body surface which lead to the necrosis of tissue culminating in the death of fish. Samples of EUS affected fishes were brought from various water bodies and examined. Ten different bacterial isolates viz., Aeromonas hydrophila (R1), A. sobria (R2), Pseudomonas fluorescens (R3), P. aeruginosa (R4), Pseudomonas sp. (R5), Cytophaga sp. (R6), Lactobacillus sp. (R7). Micrococcus varians (C1), Streptococcus sp. (C2) and Staphylococcus sp. (C3) have been isolated from most of the affected fishes. Out of the bacteria isolated, Aeromonas hydrophila, Pseudomonas fluorescens and Micrococcus varians dominated almost all the cultures.
